York (pronounced /ˈjɔrk/ ( listen)) is a walled city, situated at the confluence of the Rivers Ouse and Foss in North Yorkshire, England. The city has a rich heritage and has provided the backdrop to major political events throughout much of its two millennia of existence.

The city was founded by the Romans in 71 AD. They called it Eboracum, a name perhaps derived from one used by the British tribes who inhabited the area. The Romans made it the capital of their Province of Britannia Inferior. At the end of Roman rule in 415 AD the settlement was taken over by the Angles and the city was renamed Eoforwic. It served as the capital of the Anglian Kingdom of Northumbria. When the Vikings captured the city in 866 AD they renamed it Jórvík and it became the capital of a wider kingdom of the same name covering much of Northern England. After the Norman conquest, the name "York", which was first used in the 13th century, gradually evolved. In the Middle Ages York grew as a major wool trading centre and the ecclesiastical capital of the northern province of England. The Province of York has remained one of the two Church of England ecclesiastical provinces, along with that of Canterbury.

York's location on the River Ouse, in the centre of the Vale of York and half way between the capitals of London and Edinburgh means that it has long had a significant position in the nation's transport system. The 19th century saw York, under the influence of George Hudson, become an important hub of the railway network and a manufacturing centre. In recent decades, the economy of York has moved from being dominated by its confectionery and railway-related industries to one that provides services. The University of York and health services have become major employers. Tourism also boosts the local economy because the city offers a wealth of historic attractions, of which York Minster is the most prominent, and a variety of cultural activities. York Racecourse and Bootham Crescent, the home of York City F.C., are the most prominent sporting venues in the city and the River Ouse provides opportunities for both sporting and leisure pursuits.

From 1996, the term City of York describes a unitary authority area which includes rural areas beyond the old city boundaries. In 2001 the urban area had a population of 137,505, while in 2007 the entire unitary authority had an estimated population of 193,300.

How does london nightlife compare with new york nightlife?
Q. I am from new york city. I am 23 years old. Will i be disappointed with the London nightlife compared to New York? Also are the prices similar? I am planning to go with a few of my friends for 10 days i hope that's enough. The accent is quite sexy even though i have no idea what they are saying half of the time =)

A. The London nightlife is a lot younger than the NYC one (mainly because the drinking age is 18 in London). Also, clubs here cater to every walk of life. There are tons of gay bars in Soho, upscale bars in Mayfair and the more affordable but still chic places in Leicester square. Price wise, a vodka tonic can be as little as 2 at the Soho Bar to 9 at The Penthouse. So it all really depends on where you go. You ll have a blast here! Just don t forget your ID (they don t accept anything other than a passport or drivers license here).

How long do you have to live in New york to become a resident?
Q. Before my senior year of college I'm planning to move from Georgia to New York. Can I become a legal resident of New York (I am not a citizen I am a legal alien of the United States) during my senior year of high school and then go to college in NYC? I would be living without my parents but they would still be supporting me financially, is this possible?

What is the cheapest way to fly to New York and also stay in New York?
Q. I want to take my two daughters to New York - they are 14 and 17. Does anyone know the cheapest way to do it bearing in mind their ages?

A. www.Expedia.co.uk We booked our New York holiday through them, it worked out really well with prices as you can pick your hotel and flight, so your in control of the price. The Belevedere Hotel, 48th Street, 8th Av is where we stay every time we've been to NYC and we love it. It is in Manhatten 5 mins away from Times Square, 10 mins from Central Park and 2 blocks from the Rockefeller Observation Center but it is just down a little road so it's set back off the road, which makes it a little quieter. It has internet access, cafe, shop, resturant, 24/7 desk, the staff are really nice! It is good value for money. With Expedia (Not sure if you have used it before) you can pick your flights it will come up with the cheaper options first but… [cont.]
