The visual arts are art forms that focus on the creation of works which are primarily visual in nature, such as traditional plastic arts - drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, printmaking-, modern visual arts -photography, video and filmmaking-, design and crafts. Many artistic disciplines (performing arts, language arts, textile arts, and culinary arts) involve aspects of the visual arts as well as other types, so these definitions are not strict.

A changing concept The current usage of the term "visual arts" includes fine arts as well as crafts, but this was not always the case. Before the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain and elsewhere at the turn of the 20th century, "visual artist" referred to a person working in the fine arts (such as painting, sculpture, or printmaking) and not the handicraft, craft, or applied art disciplines. The distinction was emphasized by artists of the Arts and Crafts movement who valued vernacular art forms as much as high forms. The movement contrasted with modernists who sought to withhold the high arts from the masses by keeping them esoteric. Art schools made a distinction between the fine arts and the crafts in such a way that a craftsperson could not be considered a practitioner of art.

The visual arts and music: how do they relate, how do they differ, thoughts?
Q. I'm trying to do some research for a paper I need to write on comparing and contrasting visual arts and the auditory arts (music.) Any ideas and opinions on this topic would be great. This is less of a question and more of a discussion. Thanks. (:

A. I think it may be a good idea to compare Claude Monet (Painter) and Debussy (Composer) from the Impression period. They are similar in the way that they were both pioneers of their genre/style and composed things short and choppily (Monet with short brush strokes, Debussy with short choppy cords). They differ in the way that Money was proud to be called an Impressionist and Debussy was ashamed and appalled. To be more vague, both art forms convey feeling and emotion, but differ in the process and the way in which they are percieved; Visual art via eyes and Music via ears. Hope this helps.

Q. The visual arts and literature within the Early Chinese civilization were controlled by the government. How did this control influence the development of art for the civilization?

A. G'day George F, Thank you for your question. Those arts and literary works which pleased the Government were published and funded. Those which did not please the Government did not receive funding. As there were often no alternative sources of funding, Government and the ruling princes greatly influenced the development of art. Chinese philosophers, writers, and poets were highly respected, and played key roles in preserving and promoting the culture of the empire. Some classical scholars, however, were noted for their daring depictions of the lives of the common people, often to the displeasure of authorities. I have attached sources for your reference.
