Will switching a foreign language in Junior year affect admission to a good college?
Q. My son is choosing a language for his junior year. He has taken Spanish 1, 2 and 3. He now wants to switch to Chinese because he is unprepared for Spanish 4 and he is tired of Spanish. However he is a good student at a "gifted school" and on an Ivy League tract. So, will switching be a negative?

A. If he's already taken 3 years of Spanish, it's probably fine for him to switch. Doing 2 years of 2 languages (as only his 9th and 10th grade year of Spanish count, most likely) is fine. The bad thing about switching is that he won't have taken the necessary classes to get to AP Level, so he won't get college credit. Also, if the college asks him to explain why he switched languages, being "unprepared for Spanish 4" is a very, very bad reason. Switching languages shows a lack of commitment, so you should make sure that he is committed to Chinese and won't be switching to German for senior year. I think he'll be okay. If he likes, he could take the Spanish AP now, before he's forgotten the language. I don't know how his school system… [cont.]

How should I go about switching to Ubuntu?
Q. I'm a newbie to Linux and I've been researching versions and obviously Ubuntu appealed to me, but I'm not sure how to go about switching to Ubuntu. I'd assume using a dual boot at first would be a smart idea to start out with, if not to keep. I am running on Windows Vista home premium on an HP Pavilion laptop. I'm also not sure which version of Ubuntu to get.

A. I would suggest using the Wubi installer. This enables you to install Ubuntu just like a Windows app. You can remove it from your computer from the add/remove programs. This is a great way to see if you want to use it, without any risk at all to your system. If you decide you want to keep it a permanent part of your computer I would then suggest dual booting the traditional way because the Wubi installer does have some minor limitations mostly its slower. Go to and download the instlaller. It will ask you just a very few simple questions and download Ubuntu for you restart and boot into Ubuntu to complete the setup. I would suggest just good ol' Ubuntu over Kubuntu but that's just a matter of opinion. Hope that helps drop me a line if… [cont.]

How difficult is switching over from national guard to army reserve?
Q. I heard the commanders most likely refuse to release their soldiers unless the soldiers' commitment is ful-filled. If switching over to army reserve is possible and easy, what is the procedure of it? Is talking to a reserve recruiter first?
Asked by Jackstarks - Wed Oct 10 21:34:22 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If the commander won't work with you, you might have to wait until your enlistment is up. Most recruiters might not even touch you until your enlistment is almost up. You can ask them the process though, for future reference. If you were allowed to, you would need a release from your commander, and then a gaining unit taking you in. Bring it up to your chain of command if you're really interested in it, but don't get your hopes up. It also depends on your MOS. Some transfer, others don't.
