In electronics, a switch is an electrical component that can break an electrical circuit, interrupting the current or diverting it from one conductor to another. The most familiar form of switch is a manually operated electromechanical device with one or more sets of electrical contacts. Each set of contacts can be in one of two states: either 'closed' meaning the contacts are touching and electricity can flow between them, or 'open', meaning the contacts are separated and nonconducting. A switch may be directly manipulated by a human as a control signal to a system, such as a computer keyboard button, or to control power flow in a circuit, such as a light switch. Automatically-operated switches can be used to control the motions of machines, for example, to indicate that a garage door has reached its full open position or that a machine tool is in a position to accept another workpiece. Switches may be operated by process variables such as pressure, temperature, flow, current, voltage, and force, acting as sensors in a process and used to automatically control a system. For example, a thermostat is a temperature-operated switch used to control a heating process. A switch that is operated by another electrical circuit is called a relay. Large switches may be remotely operated by a motor drive mechanism. Some switches are used to isolate electric power from a system, providing a visible point of isolation that can be pad-locked if necessary to prevent accidental operation of a machine during maintenance, or to prevent electric shock. Q. I recently bought a tocco lite, and found that everytime I touched the phonebook option the phone would automatically switch off. I can't add in new contacts and stuff and it happens every time. When I type a text and then try to add the sender's number using the phonebook it also switches off. I got the phone unlocked yesterday, and the same thing keeps on happening. Other than that it's fine. How do I fix this problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Asked by Aqua123 - Thu Jul 1 02:08:38 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments How can I re-wire three switches connected to one light? Q. The hall light in my new house is connected to three different switches (let's call them A, B, and C). The light will only turn on if all switches are down, or if A is down and B and C are up. Why was it wired this way?! I would like to re-wire the switches so that I could use each switch to turn the light on and off. Any advice? Thanks! The house isn't brand new so I can't contact whoever wired it. Asked by Leah - Tue Oct 9 21:56:00 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. The switches have been wired incorrectly. Simple as that. A voltmeter or voltage detector is required to do this without a lot of trial and error. You will have two 3 way switches, and a 4 way switch. The 3 way switches will have three wires and the 4 way switch will have 4 wires. Look at the diagram on this site and wire your switches the same. Power comes in to the common of the first three way switch. Two runner wires then go to the top of the four way switch. Two runner wires then go from the bottom of that switch to the other three way switch the same as the first switch. A wire goes from the common on that second three way switch to the light. Q. I have these two light switches in my house controlling one light bulb. When the light is off, one switch is flipped up, and the other is flipped down. How can I change it so that both switches are flipped down when the light is off? Thanks Asked by Andrew - Tue Jun 30 18:21:45 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. If this is a standard 3-way light switch (at any given time, the light can always be turned on or off from either location), the fix is easy. 1. Turn Off The Power. 2A. Remove one of the switches, turn it over and put it back in. --- OR --- 2B. Remove one of the switches and swap the two "traveler" wires. These are the wires to go to the other switch. Since I can't possibly know what color they are or anything like that, the best reference I can give you is that they will be connected to similar looking screws on the switch (probably silver or brass colored). The third screw on the switch (which you dont mess with) will be a different color, painted black or somehow marked as different than the other two screws. Do not confuse this with… [cont.] Answered by TechnoStuff - Tue Jun 30 22:18:56 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "switches" |
