Photography (pronounced /fәˈtɒɡrәfi/) (from Greek φωτο and γραφία) is the process, activity and art of creating still or moving pictures by recording radiation on a sensitive medium, such as a photographic film, or an electronic sensor. Light patterns reflected or emitted from objects activate a sensitive chemical or electronic sensor during a timed exposure, usually through a photographic lens in a device known as a camera that also stores the resulting information chemically or electronically. Photography has many uses for business, science, art and pleasure.

Lens and mounting of a large-format camera. A historic camera: the Contax S of 1949 — the first pentaprism SLR. Nikon F of 1959 — the first 35mm film system camera. Late Production Minox B camera with later style "honeycomb" selenium light meter

The word "photography" comes from the Greek φώς (phos) "light" + γραφίς (graphis) "stylus", "paintbrush" or γραφή (graphê) "representation by means of lines" or "drawing", together meaning "drawing with light." Traditionally, the products of photography have been called negatives and photographs, commonly shortened to photos.

What is a good photography book for beginners that also inspires creativity?
Q. I am purchasing a digital camera soon, one that is of the cheaper point & shoot variety with maybe some extra features that let me adjust photos more to my liking. I also have an SLR camera (not digital) that I found in my house that I'd like to start using as well. What's a good book that covers the basics of photography (applicable to digital and non digital) and also maybe gives advice on the artistry of photography?

A. Congratulations - very few people seem to realize just how much of a difference a bit of knowledge would make to their images!!! I would suggest you head to your local library. I have read sooo many different books, and each one had something new to offer. If you really fall in love with one of them, you can always go and buy it then, but start off just reading whatever you can get your hands on. Also don't forget the online resources, there are countless tutorials to watch and read. All the big camera manufacturers like Canon, Nikon and Olympus etc have learning or "school" sections on their web sites, full of worthwhile tips.

Any photography tips on developing confidence to take shots of public areas?
Q. I've recently taken up a photography course and I've found that taking action shots of public areas can be a real pain. I'm usually stopped by police saying professional photography is prohibited. I also find that approaching people and asking them if they're willing to pose for a shot is equally as frustrating and can be embarrassing. Any tips on overcoming this?

A. You have to be confident and convey to strangers that you know what you're doing, while saying you're only a student, so they'll be glad to help. Just be honest and try to read their body language and preempt their questions before it's asked ("no, I won't post it online, it's just for class", etc). If you fidget too much or are too nervous, they'll pick up on that and won't be as willing to commit their time. If you're a guy trying to take picture of kids at a park, parents will generally be nervous. If you're a girl, they tend to be a bit more receptive. Just approach adults as if you are about to ask for the time, and tell something nice about them, like why you're photographing them ("Excuse me, I noticed you have a really cool hat,… [cont.]
