How did the avant-garde movement change ideas in the history of photography?
Q. Yeah, just kinda stuck on this question...and could you also describe the avant-garde movement a little?

A. I've never heard of an single "avant-garde movement" in photography. At various times, various photographers have, as individuals or in groups, changed the way people think of photography. For instance, soft-focus pictorialism was the reining style of art-photography until WWI, then changed to the naturalistic, sharp focus style we know today, called "straight" photography. Were "avant-garde" photographers involved? Yes, but the change was also about the times. Romantic legends aside, for a style to be superseded by another style, the times must be correct for a change. Usually the older style has run its course and lost vitality. The newer style is better suited to the current world-view. Most successful revolutions are merely… [cont.]
