Early development

The first missiles to be used operationally were a series of missiles developed by Nazi Germany in World War II. Most famous of these are the V-1 flying bomb and V-2, both of which used a simple mechanical autopilot to keep the missile flying along a pre-chosen route. Less well known were a series of anti-shipping and anti-aircraft missiles, typically based on a simple radio control system directed by the operator. However, these early systems in World War 2 were only built in small numbers.

Technology

Guided missiles have a number of different system components:

A. There's a collection of short films on Teachers Tube that might help you: You can also check out the History Channel store and the PBS store. Both have a pretty extensive collection of specials on the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Cold War.

A. The US placed nuclear warheads and rockets in Turkey, right on the USSR's border. The Russians tried to respond by putting missiles in Cuba, on the US coast. Kennedy decided that, rather than bomb the missile fields, he'd blockade Soviet shipping from Cuba, to keep out the missiles themselves. The US could have withdrawn missiles from Turkey. The USSR could have shipped warheads first, and built launch facilities the US could detect after wards. Both sides could have gone for all out war.
