Impressionism was a 19th-century art movement that began as a loose association of Paris-based artists exhibiting their art publicly in the 1860s. The name of the movement is derived from the title of a Claude Monet work, Impression, Sunrise (Impression, soleil levant), which provoked the critic Louis Leroy to coin the term in a satiric review published in Le Charivari.

Characteristics of Impressionist paintings include visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), ordinary subject matter, the inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience, and unusual visual angles. The emergence of Impressionism in the visual arts was soon followed by analogous movements in other media which became known as Impressionist music and Impressionist literature.

Impressionism also describes art created in this style, but outside of the late 19th century time period.

Using Claude Monet's style, how can I create a piece of art work using impressionism?
Q. I need to create a work of art with oil pastels using Monet's impressionism style, but I don't know how. How do you create art like an impressionist? What am I suppose to draw? Does what you draw matter? How do I draw it?

A. These paintings usually consisted of visible brush strokes using bright use of light and varied colors. Black was rarely used. Works many times emphasized lighting and its qualities, every day subject matter that was viewed from unusual angles. Instead of mixing colors as was typical of the masters, colors would have been placed side by side thus blue and yellow would give the "impression" of green. Perhaps look at some modern day impressionist and you will be helped to find your inspiration. Do not limit yourself or you will be trying to copy rather than create.

A. Post Expressionism is a form of art in which the artist expresses himself purely through the use of form and color. It is nonrepresentational, or non-objective, art, which means that there are no concrete objects represented. Centered in New York City 1946 through the 1960's,it is now considered to be the first American artistic movement of worldwide importance, the term was originally used to describe the work of Arshile Gorky, Willem de Kooning, and Jackson Pollock. The focus is on the physical act of painting: see two groups - Action Painting and Color field painting at
