Do most art galleries charge the artist a fee (either one time or monthly dues) or only commission when sold?
Q. I realize there is probably no industry standard, but generally do independedly owned galleries that showcase works by a variety of artists charge the artists any fees other then commission? What is the range of commissions (for non famous but classically trained artists), and what else does this rate depend on?

A. Most galleries charge a commission once a work is sold, between 30 and 60% of the selling price, depending on the gallery. It's the gallery that sets the commission rate. High-end galleries tend to charge more as they actually do more for you. Each gallery will charge the same for every artist. Co-operatives may charge a monthly rate plus a low commission. It's not the best choice for artists starting out. Artists without much experience should try offering their work for sale in smaller shops or galleries where the commission is lower.

Why can't I take a photograph some art galleries, but I can in others?
Q. I have noticed that art galleries have completely different attitudes towards visitors taking photos of works of art. For example, you can't take photos in the Uffizi, Florence (although this used to be allowed) but you can in the Musee d'Orsay, Paris. I am interested to know why this is, and whether people think photography should be permitted or banned in gallery spaces where there are no copyright issues.

A. It varies from museum to museum - best thing to do is find out the rule where you are and follow it. Mostly there is a curatorial concern that the flash can, over time, damage the works. It is also true that it is getting harder for us to be able to tell the difference between a still camera and one that has video capability, and they may have a security concern that someone is using video to case the place. It also is a matter of consideration concerning the flash. Other people are there to consider the works in a tranquil and focused atmosphere and the eyes open up when you are appreciating a work to allow in all the light and details -- and then BOOM, your flash goes off next to them, which may disrupt their experience and also give… [cont.]
