What are the dangers of installing a universal catalytic converter?
Q. My catalytic converter is going out. The OEM converter is 400 dollars, and one of the Magnaflow universal converters is 70. Could using a universal converter hurt my car in any way? What differences could i expect to see? Also, how long can i safely wait before replacing the converter?

A. There are two types of Megnaflow converters, universal and direct fit. Either way, make sure it is CAF approved. The direct fit units are for those that do not need welding. Most often bolt in units. I think they are worth the few dollars more. But if your converter is welded in (post 96 I believe is the cut off date), the replacement will also have to be welded in, or special connectors used. The replacements will not hurt your car if a quality part is used (like the one you are talking about). But before you spring for the cost of a new cat, try a tune up and some systems cleaner. The problem maybe cheaper to fix then you think.

Is their a big difference in a cable digital converter box vs a normal converter box?
Q. I have an LCD high definition tv hooked up to a regular converter box. The cable company wants more money if I want a high definition converter box. Now that we are broadcasting in digital, will it make that much difference?

A. tyler is right. But I have a question about the TV you are using. Does it have built in HD tuners? if it does it may have a QAM (cable digital) and ATSC (over the air digital) tuner as well as the old NTSC (analog tuner). The reason I ask is the QAM is a hd tuner that works with most cable companies. If it was me then I would hook the cable directly to the tv (take the box out of the loop temporarily) then auto-program the cable setting under channels in your menu. Then see if you don't have free digital channels (SDTV) already. If you do, then install a splitter so you can hook up the cable box too. Then output the box through three RCA jacks to video input 1 on your tv. Then you still have all the benefits of the box, like on demand, tv… [cont.]

What is a good catalytic converter that is California legal emissions for performance?
Q. Im looking to get a new catalytic converter from the stock one that comes with a 1990 GMC Sierra but i dont really know much about what to look for in them... What are some good brands, and maybe even models that will work with 50 state legal?

A. there are several companies that make them but some do not live up to the standards make sure you get in writing what warranty covers and for how long put after market in my tahoe and it would not pass e-missions even though original is expensive it's always the best
