The emergency department (ED), sometimes termed the emergency room (ER), emergency ward (EW), accident & emergency (A&E) department or casualty department is a hospital or primary care department that provides initial treatment to patients with a broad spectrum of illnesses and injuries, some of which may be life-threatening and require immediate attention. Emergency departments developed during the 20th century in response to an increased need for rapid assessment and management of critical illnesses. In some countries, emergency departments have become important entry points for those without other means of access to medical care. The abbreviation ER has generally been used throughout the United States, while A&E is used in many Commonwealth nations. ED is most commonly used in Canada and Australia, and casualty is more common in Scotland.

Upon arrival to the ED, an individual typically undergoes a brief triage (sorting) interview to help determine the nature and severity of their illness or injury. Individuals with serious illnesses or injuries are then seen by a physician more rapidly than those with less severe symptoms or injuries. After initial assessment and treatment, patients are either admitted to the hospital, stabilized and transferred to another hospital, or discharged. Emergency department staff often includes - in addition to physicians - nurses, physician assistants (PAs), nurse practitioners, and in-house paramedics and/or emergency medical technicians, respiratory therapists, radiologic technologists, healthcare assistants (HCAs), ER scribes, volunteers, and other support staff who work as a team to treat emergency patients and provide support to family members. The emergency departments of most hospitals operate around the clock, although staffing levels attempt to mirror patient volume, which in most ED's finds its nadir between 2:00 am and 6:00 am. Most patients seek the Emergency Department in the afternoon and evening hours, and staffing mirrors this phenomenon. Since a diagnosis must be made by an attending physician, the patient is initially assigned a chief complaint rather than a diagnosis. This is usually a symptom: headache, nausea, loss of consciousness. The chief complaint remains a primary fact until the attending physician makes a diagnosis.

What exactly is a medical emergency and when is it right to go to the emergency room?
Q. Is it just life/death situations? Or what about if you are experiencing pain but you won't die if you wait a day to go to the docotor's office. It takes forever in Canada to wait and even get an x-ray done if you go to the doctor's office. Service is much faster at the emergency room if you might have some sort of infection? I've been experiencing sudden sharp lower back pain, abdomenal pain, dizziness, and shortness of breath. All this is very sudden... Is this something to go to the emergency for?

A. You can go to the emergency room for any reason. It does not have to be a life and death situation. People go to the ER for diarrhea. If you feel you need to be seen by a doctor, and you don't want to or can't wait for an appointment with your primary doctor. Than I would suggest you go, they will see you no matter what your problem is. You just may have to wait alittle while if there are more serious patients than you. And the bill may be alittle more than your primary doctor. But your health and well-being is the most important thing.

Do Health Insurance companies penalize you for a stupidly self-induced injury and visit to the Emergency Room?
Q. Simply, if you do something dumb and get hurt, something where a resulting injury is the effect of your own poor choices, will a major health care provider normally somehow penalize or refuse the Emergency Room costs? Or, is it common for a provider to change their decision to flip you the bill later on? The scope of the expense would be admitting oneself to an ER, asking a doctor a question, having two x-rays, and a recommendation for at-home treatment.

A. If you're hurt, regardless of the reason, your insurance company should pay for it. It's just like being in an auto accident,if you rear ended someone, it was your fault but you're still hurt and that is what insurance is there for. Good luck!

Can they pull a tooth in the emergency room?
Q. Okay so I need to know if I go to the emergency room for a tooth that is infected and broke off. Will they call in a dentist to fix it? Or can the attending Dr. Fix it? You see my insurance will cover ER but not Dental...Stupid I know. My tooth broke and is grossly ifected and needs to be pulled. I think there is a nerve exposed which is causing SEVERE pain. Please no lectures, Only answer if you have actually been in this situation of know actual facts about it!!! Thanks.

A. No, I don't think they will. Go and plead your case if you must - they can give you pain meds and antibiotics at least to calm it down. Unless it is life-threatening, and it's not, they won't. Call around and plead with dentists to take payments - pulling a tooth is only a couple hundred, so someone should agree to help you.
