The site of Amarna (commonly known as el-Amarna or incorrectly as Tel el-Amarna; see below) (Arabic: العمارنة al-‘amārnah‎) is located on the east bank of the Nile River in the modern Egyptian province of Minya, some 58 km (38 miles) south of the city of al-Minya, 312 km (194 miles) south of the Egyptian capital Cairo and 402 km (250 miles) north of Luxor. The site of Amarna includes several modern villages, chief of which are el-Till in the north and el-Hagg Qandil in the south.

The area contains an extensive Egyptian archaeological site that represents the remains of the capital city newly–established and built by the Pharaoh Akhenaten of the late Eighteenth Dynasty (c. 1353 BC), and abandoned shortly afterwards. The name for the city employed by the ancient Egyptians is written as Akhetaten (or Akhetaton – transliterations vary) in English transliteration. Akhetaten means "Horizon of the Aten."

The area was also occupied during later Roman and early Christian times, excavations to the south of the city have found several structures from this period.

Art History HELP?
Q. 1) What are the main differences between the Amarna style and traditional style of ancient Eyptian art? 2) Most ancient Egyption art was created for spiritual reasons, although a lot of Egyptian artwork was commissioned by pharaohs (particularly Hatshepsut and Ramesses) for another very different purpose. Identify that other purpose and provide specific examples of artwork that exemplify this.

A few months ago I had a dream....?
Q. I remember one of the best dreams I had recently was in a classroom type setting. The professor of the class told us the secret to life was "Amarna"...I googled it and it is some ancient scroll Does anyone know what this could mean? I got this from Wikipedia: In 1887 a local woman digging for sebakh uncovered a cache of over 300 cuneiform tablets (now commonly known as the Amarna Letters). These tablets recorded select diplomatic correspondence of the Pharaoh and were predominantly written in Akkadian, the lingua franca commonly used during the Late Bronze Age of the Ancient Near East for such communication. This discovery led to the recognition of the importance of the site, and lead to a further increase in exploration. There isn't… [cont.]

A. According to the source below, they seem to be political and military letters from Ancient Egypt in 1400BC, contemporary with the time of Moses. I agree it's very strange to have a name in a dream you had *not* heard before, and I would have thought you might have heard it subconsciously or something, but maybe not... I once had a very special dream in which I met an old man and as we were parting I asked him his name and he wrote it down, and I couldn't read it, and I kept asking him what it was he'd written and why he couldn't say it, no use, I kept looking and not being able to read, then one letter at a time he spelt it out to me, "O-K-A-M" and I thought cool, he of the razor (second source below), and then I woke up and thought to… [cont.]
