Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments that are bound with a medium of drying oil — especially in early modern Europe, linseed oil. Often an oil such as linseed was boiled with a resin such as pine resin or even frankincense; these were called 'varnishes' and were prized for their body and gloss. Other oils occasionally used include poppyseed oil, walnut oil, and safflower oil. These oils confer various properties to the oil paint, such as less yellowing or different drying times. Certain differences are also visible in the sheen of the paints depending on the oil. Painters often use different oils in the same painting depending on specific pigments and effects desired. The paints themselves also develop a particular feel depending on the medium. Although oil paint was first used in western Afghanistan sometime between the fifth and ninth centuries, it did not gain popularity until the 15th century. Its practice may have migrated westward during the Middle Ages. Oil paint eventually became the principal medium used for creating artworks as its advantages became widely known. The transition began with Early Netherlandish painting in northern Europe, and by the height of the Renaissance oil painting techniques had almost completely replaced tempera paints in the majority of Europe. I want to sell some artwork, but I don't want to wait a year, since it takes about a year before you can put the protective coating on. You can buy the quick drying spray varnish, like Karmar (which is the most popular brand) and use it right away. However, you asked how long an oil painting will last without a protective coat. That answer is perhaps one hundred, two hundred three hundred or more years. Look how long the paintings of the old masters have been around. Oil paintings have two natural enemies that can quicken their demise. The first is constant exposure to bright light, either direct or indirect sunlight or over-exposure to too bright man made light. The second enemy is high humidity. Remove both of these from the equation and a modern oil painting should last just as long as any by the old masters. Answered by Doc Watson - Sat Dec 1 23:32:02 2007 What method do I use to clean an oil painting that has soot on it from a fire? Q. The oil painting is owned by my mother-in-law who just survived a fire next to her apartment. Everything in her apartment is covered with a fine coat of soot. When I run my finger across the top of a picture frame there's black soot. This is her favorite and only painting. Most of her things will be replaced or cleaned by her apartment manager, except this picture. We don't know where to go on this. It will make it's way through tiny cracks and de-solve the gesso underneath, resulting in the top paint layer flaking off. You can buy paint cleaner in Art stores. Use this very sparingly! The insurance should cover the cost of having the paint restored by a professional. Have a look in the yellow pages under 'restorers'. Answered by Nick vanderwaarden - Wed Dec 24 16:16:22 2008 What is the best way to remove lint from the surface of an old oil painting?
Q. I just got back an oil painting (painted 5+ years) from storage and I hung it up at my new place but noticed that the whole painting is covered in lint. I tried to lightly brush it off with an clean large paint brush but none of the lint came off. I was thinking of using scotch tape to try to blot the painting to lift off the lint but I'm afraid of doing damage to the painting. What should I do? Asked by sage james - Thu Nov 19 05:33:02 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Use vacuum cleaner first to remove any dust - floating particles. Wipe with damp cloth. When it dries off, apply a coat of linseed oil (circular motion) -this layer will reinvigorate the painting also.
