Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments that are bound with a medium of drying oil — especially in early modern Europe, linseed oil. Often an oil such as linseed was boiled with a resin such as pine resin or even frankincense; these were called 'varnishes' and were prized for their body and gloss. Other oils occasionally used include poppyseed oil, walnut oil, and safflower oil. These oils confer various properties to the oil paint, such as less yellowing or different drying times. Certain differences are also visible in the sheen of the paints depending on the oil. Painters often use different oils in the same painting depending on specific pigments and effects desired. The paints themselves also develop a particular consistency depending on the medium.

Although oil paint was first used in western Afghanistan sometime between the fifth and ninth centuries, it did not gain popularity until the 15th century. Its practice may have migrated westward during the Middle Ages. Oil paint eventually became the principal medium used for creating artworks as its advantages became widely known. The transition began with Early Netherlandish painting in northern Europe, and by the height of the Renaissance oil painting techniques had almost completely replaced tempera paints in the majority of Europe.

How do I get started with oil painting?
Q. I have an oil painting I have to do for an art class and I'd like to know what I need to prepare for it. I already have a canvas. What are the other materials that I need (aside from the oil paints, of course)? I've heard about linseed oil and turpentine. How do I use those and what are they for? I have experience with other mediums such as watercolor, acrylics but this is my first time using oil paints.

A. All that you absolutely need is paint and a prepared surface. A pallet and a knife to mix colors, brushes, paint thinner, and maybe some medium will make things easier. If the canvas that you have is one of those pre-streched ones in the celephane or a canvas board from an artists' suply store/ hobby shop , it is most likely prepared and ready to go. It should have a layer of white on the surface (canvas is naturaly a greyish off-white). If you have unprepared canvas, you need an archival primer. Acrylic gesso is the safest and easiest to use. Chances are, your canvas is already gessoed and ready to go. Brushes can make your painting experience much less frustrating. You can use any thing that works to apply the paint- folded up paper,… [cont.]

How do I ship oversized Oil painting to India?
Q. I have some oil and acrylic paintings on canvas that I would like to ship to India from US to my sister. The canvas sizes are 24"x24" (inches) and 30"x30". So they are substantially big. I am afraid that the cost to ship them as is might be a lot and they may be damaged in handling. Someone suggested I take the canvas out from the frame and roll it up and then just send it. But I am afraid if I take the staples out to separate the canvas stapled onto the frame, it may damage the canvas cloth and the painting. Any experience with this? How do people ship paintings internationally?

A. I have shipped paintings all over the world and shipped one back to Texas that size from France. What I did was build a wooden crate. The shipping was with a freight company and I took it to their warehouse near the airport in Toulouse. The freight company had a similar warehouse in Houston at the air port and delivered the art. It was around$100 not including the box. I needed to have paperwork saying how much the art was and that the artist was alive as France has a different program for artwork of dead artists) So check out what kind of bill of sale you will need for customs or if a factor is involved. I found out later that the airport could have recommended several companies that offer this freighting service so I can't tell you if I… [cont.]

Where is the best place to sell a 19th century oil painting?
Q. I will inherit an original oil painting by Eduard Grutzner. This painting has been professionally cleaned, repaired and relined by Lisa Dupuy, who is considered the best in her field. I am looking for advice on where and how to sell it. Can anyone advise me?

A. according to artprice.com his works fetch up to 20'000usd an over at auction. my advice is to forget about ebay and go to sothebys or christies or any other internaionally active auction house as they might be able to place it in europe, where most of his works are being sold.
