Fine art describes an art form developed primarily for aesthetics and/or concept rather than utility. Today, the fine arts commonly include visual and performing art forms, such as painting, sculpture, music, dance, theatre, architecture, photography and printmaking. However, in some institutes of learning or in museums fine art, and frequently the term fine arts (pl.) as well, are associated exclusively with the visual art forms. Art is often a synonym for fine art in this sense, as employed in the term "art gallery". Historically, the fine arts were limited to painting, sculpture, architecture and engraving. I am traveling to NYC and I am wondering if there is a best place to find used fine art photography books or books on photography theory? Asked by flighter@rogers.com - Thu Dec 25 23:02:06 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Strand Book Store on lower Broadway, near 10th Street, in the Village. They have a great art book section, including photography. Also, the bookstore at the Museum of Modern Art. They have a good photography section, if I remember correctly. And you might try the bookstore at the Museum for the International Center of Photography on 6th Avenue (that's Avenue of the Americas if you are from out of town) somewhere in the West 40s. EDIT: I just realized that you said "used". Well, if that's the case, definitely go to the Strand. They have both used and new, and their used fine arts books are fantastic!!! The other two places I mentioned only sell new books. But the Strand is definitely what you want! Q. I have become interested in art glass. Art glass, and sculpture-like works of art rendered in the finest glass. Who are some of the masters of this art, what are the titles of some of their works, and where are some of these works on view? Asked by timothy - Fri Mar 28 10:41:04 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Sculpture in glass is relatively recent. But Galle did small scale commercial sculptures successfully. Lino Tagliapietra is one of the acknowledged modern masters. Much modern glass sculpture has been cast glass in abstract. Look at the collection of Corning Museum of Glass (www.cmog.org) Art glass including Chihuly's has been based on vessels rather than solid sculpture.
