Fine art describes an art form developed primarily for aesthetics and/or concept rather than practical application. Art is often a synonym for fine art, as employed in the term "art gallery".

Historically, the fine arts were limited to painting, sculpture, architecture and engraving. Today, the fine arts commonly include visual and performing art forms, such as painting, sculpture, installation, Calligraphy, music, dance, theatre, architecture, photography and printmaking. However, in some institutes of learning or in museums fine art, and frequently the term fine arts (pl.) as well, are associated exclusively with the visual art forms.

The term is today usually avoided by academic art historians, and is much less used in any context in the UK than North America, especially in the singular form.

Is it possible to study fine art, even though you didn't start of with a lot of natural, drawing talent?
Q. Can you make up for lack of by just practising till you're very good ? And then...hypothetically speaking, would natural talent have mattered if you got accepted in the end??? (thats IF of course) Or do you think only ppl with natural talent should study fine art because they'll always be ahead ? And what if it's not for career purpose but you can afford the time and money AND u'd already have a degree in a field that has stable job outlook?

A. Not all good artists draw very well. Drawing, in fact, can be learned. If you have artistic talents in other areas, but aren't good at drawing, then you can study fine art and learn to draw. In fact, at least at reputable art schools, the majority of your first year courses are foundational, and you take things like life drawing, still life drawing, etc., to learn to control those media. You may never become a great illustrator, but your drawing will improve. And if you have artistic talents in other areas, then studying fine arts may work for you. You can learn to draw well enough to get your ideas for your, let's say, digital media projects down on paper; and to gain an understanding of the underlying artistic concepts re: what you're [cont.]

could fashion be considered a fine art in the same league as painting or music?
Q. on the one hand, it is an expression of culture. but at the same time, most fashions are fads and do not stay culturally relevant for more than a few years at best. im taking a humanities class and i just started thinking about it. what is the definition of a fine art?

A. it could be argued that it is an art with the human body as a canvas. I'm not really one for fasion (my closet is full of whatever the cheapest bluejeans were the day i went to buy some and grey t-shirts) but it is taken very seriously by some, and for them has all the traits that i would say make a fine art. however, for the vast majority of people it is only a means to an end; namely a statment about their own self identity in the vein of "i'm a part of this or that social group" or as simple as "my mother taught me it's rude to go shopping in the nude." For these people it isn't as much an art. but the same argument could be made for a Dali or monet or the like. for some people it is very much a seriuos art form, for others it is… [cont.]
