Contemporary art can be defined variously as art produced at this present point in time or art produced since World War II. The definition of the word contemporary would support the first view, but museums of contemporary art commonly define their collections as consisting of art produced since World War II. But I don't know much about either. I'll be up there in May. As far as my preferences in Art, I like it all. I like a lot of traditional art and contemporary art (besides most of the my third grader could do that modern art). I'm going to school for architecture and minoring in Art History so I'd like to get the most out of this trip I could. Which Museum would you recommend? Though they're both great museums, the Art Institute does have an edge. It's much bigger, with areas dedicated to architecture as well as two-dimensional art. If you're coming May 16th or later, the Modern Wing will be open to the public. I've been inside already, and it looks beautiful-- the building itself is art! Much modern art isn't about art or communicating ideas, it's about showing yourself to 'better' and more 'complicated' than ordinary mortals who just can't get it. Really there isn't so much to get. That isn't all contemporary art, but it does describe much of it. Also, many 'artists' are insulated from the the reality of self-support (or even true patronage) that prompted relatable art in earlier periods. that's my take, at any rate.
