Creativity is a mental process involving the discovery of new ideas or concepts, or new associations of the existing ideas or concepts, fueled by the process of either conscious or unconscious insight.

From a scientific point of view, the products of creative thought (sometimes referred to as divergent thought) are usually considered to have both originality and appropriateness.

Although intuitively a simple phenomenon, it is in fact quite complex. It has been studied from the perspectives of behavioural psychology, social psychology, psychometrics, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, philosophy, aesthetics, history, economics, design research, business, and management, among others. The studies have covered everyday creativity, exceptional creativity and even artificial creativity. Unlike many phenomena in science, there is no single, authoritative perspective or definition of creativity. And unlike many phenomena in psychology, there is no standardized measurement technique.

Creativity has been attributed variously to divine intervention, cognitive processes, the social environment, personality traits, and chance ("accident", "serendipity"). It has been associated with genius, mental illness, humour and REM sleep. Some say it is a trait we are born with; others say it can be taught with the application of simple techniques. Creativity has also been viewed as a beneficence of a muse or Muses.

Although popularly associated with art and literature, it is also an essential part of innovation and invention and is important in professions such as business, economics, architecture, industrial design, graphic design, advertising, mathematics, music, science and engineering, and teaching.

Despite, or perhaps because of, the ambiguity and multi-dimensional nature of creativity, entire industries have been spawned from the pursuit of creative ideas and the development of creativity techniques.

Leonardo da Vinci is well known for his creative works.

Creativity has been associated with right or forehead brain activity or even specifically with lateral thinking.

Some students of creativity have emphasized an element of chance in the creative process. Linus Pauling, asked at a public lecture how one creates scientific theories, replied that one must endeavor to come up with many ideas — then discard the useless ones.

Another adequate definition of creativity, according to Otto Rank, is that it is an "assumptions-breaking process." Creative ideas are often generated when one discards preconceived assumptions and attempts a new approach or method that might seem to others unthinkable.

Are the traits of creativity, flexibility and communication important in an effective psychologist?
Q. I have a uni assignment for my academic literacies class, asking me to write about whether or not the attributes of creativity, flexiblity and communication are important in my chosen field - psychology. Just looking for an outside opinion, and new thoughts on the question.
Asked by Jade - Mon Jul 28 21:10:04 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, those attributes are essential, especially good communication. Since psychologists are working directly with the thought processes in the brain, they need to successfully interpret what the client says and also conclude what the client means. And, the psychologist must have the necessary expertise to communicate his conclusions to the client in a manner which is understandable and logical.

How does the No Child Left Behind Act affect creativity in the classroom?
Q. Is it possible to promote student creativity while having to "teach the test"? How would you encourage creativity in the classroom under NCLB?

A. Honestly, as teachers, we have to stop thinking of it, as teaching to the test. That was the first obstacle I had to overcome. Every state lays down standards, benchmarks, objectives, whatever your state calls them. The only difference is that NCLB wants a check. While I am not a proponent of NCLB, I refusted to let it dictate how I teach. Well, it is possible to promote student creativity. The test for Florida requires students to be well versed in non-fiction reading. The first 9 weeks, I teach middle school, I have my students locate articles that tell who they are. They have to create a collage using headlines, maps, graphs, charts, all of those things that the students are going to be tested on from the newspapers and magazines they… [cont.]

How can I expand my creativity as a writer?
Q. After helping my friend with a paper, she told me that we should write a book together. I was excited until she said, "I have the ideas and you have the grammar. We'd make a great team!" How can I expand my creativity as a writer?
Asked by Skittles-Dark Edition - Tue Dec 1 04:13:48 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Creativity is not inborn, so the simple answer is to just work at it. Read a lot of creative works, and attempt different approaches to writing. Don't try to imitate anything though, just write naturally.
