What are the primary differences between the Roman Catholic and Episcopalian faiths?
Q. My boyfriend and I are both Roman Catholics but are interested in the Episcopalian church. We don't know much about the Episcopal faith, but have been told that it's very similar to the Roman Catholic church, but more "liberal". What are the differences in tradition, theology, and church doctrine?

A. You're right in that they are very similar. I'm trying to find more about the differences myself but only so I can be informed. I looove the Catholic faith and would never leave it, even for a denomination that is really similar. One difference I know of is that Episcopalians have open Communion. That means that anyone can receive Communion there, while the Catholic Church says you have to be Catholic to receive the Eucharist. That may seem mean and unfair, but it is not. First, we want to take precautions in that those receiving Communion know and have discerned what they are taking part in. 1 Corinthians 11:27 stresses the importance of this. How is the Roman system of policing different from today ?

A. The Romans had very little concept of rights unless you were a full Roman citizen. Their interrogation technique was generally to flog you half to death before asking any questions. Summary execution was the usual way it was handled.

Is it possible to trace one's ancestry back to a Roman emperor?
Q. I've been attempting to do genealogical research recently. Interestingly, I have so far discovered that I am descended from Henry II of England. However, I have also seen a website that suggests that I could be descended from a Roman emperor, as well. I don't really see how that can be, though, because genealogical records weren't kept in ancient Rome the way they were kept among the European nobility and royalty during the Middle Ages. I can understand why there would be records linking my family to medieval English royalty, but I can't imagine that there would be records linking my family to Roman emperors.

A. Hello, Some make this claim but the general consensus is no. Even European wealthy aristocrats who have lots of money to burn finding their family lineage find that things become very murky indeed past the 13th or 12th centuries. Many records disappeared or were not kept over the dark ages and the obliteration of many church birth and baptismal records during the French Revolution ruined research for everyone. Also there was too much mixing by waves of barbarians and immigrants entering Itlay after the 5th century that you are dealing with a real hodge podge of things. Michael Kelly
