An art critic is a person who specializes in evaluating art. Their written critiques, or reviews, are published in newspapers, magazines, books and on web sites. Art collectors and patrons often utilize the advice of art critics as a way to enhance their appreciation of the art they are viewing. Typically the art critic views art at exhibitions, galleries, museums or artists' studios. Professional art critics are expected to have a keen eye for art and a thorough knowledge of art history. Knowledge, however, provides no guarantee that a critic will know if a work of art, an exhibition, or an artist will stand out in history as "great". The opinions of art critics has the potential to stir debate on art related topics. Due to this the viewpoints of art critics writing for art publications and newspapers adds to public discourse concerning art and culture. Some of today's art critics use art blogs and other online platforms in order to connect with a wider audience and expand debate about art. Many now famous and celebrated artists were not recognized by the art critics of their time, often because their art was in a style not yet understood or favored. Conversely, some critics, have become particularly important helping to explain and promote new art movements — Roger Fry with the Post-Impressionist movement, Lawrence Alloway with Pop Art as examples. What ever happened to Sister Wendy(I think that's her name)...the nun that was also an art critic? Asked by kissmybum - Tue Nov 7 23:23:37 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I don't know, but she was incredible. You used to be able to buy the series at Tower Records, but I don't know if it is still being released. You could try eBay or something like that if you wanted to. Her interpretations were incredibly insightful. I believe a lot of books were published as well and any large book store should have something. Thanks for reminding me about her! Answered by rndyh77 - Wed Nov 8 04:07:23 2006 Art Critic Service? Q. Where can i get someone to criticize my art work? Asked by Qyn - Wed Apr 4 05:52:55 2007 - - 0 Answers - 0 Comments A. Put your artwork up on a site like photobucket or imageshack and let people look at it. Of course you will get a few bozos who will mouth off and give you no useful information and a few who will say it's great because they think that will encourage you, but eventually you will get to a few that will critique your work and give you valuable feedback. Edit your question to include a link and I'm sure anyone that answers will go check out your work. Answered by Fin - Wed Apr 4 06:06:44 2007 Why art painters like Norman Rockwell or Frank Frazetta considered only "illustrators"?
Q. Rembrandt painted portraits for profit. Michelangelo did work for hire. So did virtually all famous artists at one time or other. Why is it that Rembrandt or DaVinci are considered true artists yet Rockwell only a mere "illustrator"? Renaissance painters painted similar themes and subject matter. They painted murals and portraits. They were all commercial artists. So why do art critics dislike Norman Rockwell, but accept the others? Tell me the distinction between illustrator and a "real" artist? Asked by Joe - Sat Jan 12 07:35:12 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. America's contribution to folk art is... commercial art. Rockwell's art was contrived as offset printed pieces giving the best view. Travel anywhere in the world and you will realize the intense competition of America's many-duplicated products contributed to produced beautiful store shelves. Rembrandt has the appearance of being an illustrator only because he didn't work for rich bishops, much to Mr. Buonarroti's discredit. Only one of Michelangelo's works is in a private collection, and it's garbage. Painting is for the soul. Sculpture is for the mind. Rockwell comes in for the gut.
